What is CALL?

CALL stands for "Computer-Assisted Language Learning" or "Computer-Aided Language Learning".

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is an approach to language teaching and learning in which computer technology is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of materials to be learned. CALL usually includes a substantial interactive element so that students can get immediate feedback.

Historically, the use of CALL in a language-learning curriculum had led to great anxiety among many language teachers. However, our years of actual observations in the field have consistently dispelled the myth that CALL will eliminate the need for teachers. Quite the opposite, with increased student interests, a teacher's presence is deemed even more important to students when doing CALL activities.

Furthermore, from real-world uses, it has be found that most students prefer to have a blended learning approach where there are both a teacher conducting traditional, face-to-face classes combined with CALL, if given the choice.

In using CALL, not only are teachers needed during the initial learning curve of the students, but teachers are also needed to conduct review sessions to reinforce what was learned. Encouraging students to participate and offering praises are important during the learning process, and only teachers can provide this in a meaningful way, not CALL.

Many CALL systems require teachers to be familiar with computer technology, such as using a chat room or web conferencing. However, the Greenwood CALL system understands that busy teachers may not have time to be computer experts, so the Greenwood system is designed predominately to be used by students outside of the classroom. With the Greewood system,

teachers uncomfortable with the computer don't need to touch the computer!

But yet teachers can continue to guide students through the computer multimedia lessons based on the Greenwood Lesson Books.
